Dialog Editing is the foundational stage of the post-production process. A well organized session and process provided by the Dialog Editor will allow the subsequent sound engineers and mixers down the line to produce the highest quality mixes for your project.
The Dialog Editor responsibilities typically include:
Receiving the AAF sessions from the Film Editor and organizing the audio tracks to prepare stems for the Mixer.
Determining what the optimal mics used for recording will remain in post-production and removing unnecessary audio materials; e.g. redundancies, unusable recordings, anything that the Mixer will not need moving forward.
The Dialog Editor preps the audio tracks so that they are ready for mixing and sound design. Responsibilities at this level include: crossfades, fade in/outs, finding and creating ‘fill’ tracks, removing incidental recording noise (eg clipping as a result of ‘rough’ edits made by the video editor/producer)
Removing pops/clicks, clips, any interference in the microphone might be picking up that is not integral to the scene.
